Summer is winding down, Hurricane Hermine just came through and we are ready for cooler weather and some good Fall fishing. This summer started with some of the best snook fishing I’ve had in years. Fishing the flats, passes and beaches produced big numbers of fish and big fish as well. Our best snook fishing […]

• At Fort Pierce, “Snook season opened on the Atlantic coast Thursday and we’ve had one nice, slot 31-inch fish from the inlet already,” reports Clint Walker at the Fishing Center of St. Lucie (772-465-7637). Flounder are starting to bite from the south jetty on live shrimp and jigs tipped with shrimp. There’s lots of sheepshead and black drum being caught in the inlet. On the flats inside, trout are biting in two to four feet of water over grass and redfish are biting around deeper water in the mangroves. “I’ve heard nothing about offshore, it’s been too windy,” Walker says.

It’s crazy that different types of lures work on many of the same fish. I really like the look of the white bucktail. I will have to ask my dad if he has ever been saltwater fishing, and what lures he used.

We had such a great experience fishing with Captain Anthony and Joey! It was such an awesome feeling reeling in a Bonnethead shark! Captain Anthony and Joey were super friendly and helpful, and they w…ere very eager to make sure that we had the best fishing experience possible. They definitely know where to go to find the fish they are looking for, and we caught a bunch of fish and two sharks. We will definitely be making the trip again! See More

Now although you can’t get your undies in a wad everytime you see an angler not handling a fish correctly (because they might actually be taking home the fish to eat), it certainly helps to get in a habit of ALWAYS handling fish with care.

Tampa Bay is world renowned for some of the best light tackle inshore fishing. This region includes the pristine flats of the various bays making up the greater Tampa Bay, along with deep channel cuts leading into the Port of Tampa. Tarpon, the “Silver King,” are plentiful in Tampa Bay. They often weigh more than 100 pounds with some occasionally topping 200 pounds – a real thrill on light pound test line. The Tampa area is also famous for spearfishing. An abundance of large game fish, such as cobia, snapper, kingfish, bonito, mackerel and grouper, can be found in the Gulf waters.

I still recall growing up every summer at Ponce Inlet my dad, brother, grandfather, and I would head offshore every chance we had in our 24-ft Wellcraft boat. Even though it was only 24 feet, it had a small cabin, outriggers, and more tackle than you could shake a leg at.

Don’t forget to bring the kids. They are the future of our sport. If they get to go, they will learn to love the outdoors, inshore fishing charters. Remember your camera, you never know what you might hook while fishing in Destin, Florida – The Luckiest Charter Boat Fishing Village in the world!

You’ll need to park and carry your tackle, but the pier has shelters, a snack bar and bait shop as well as fish cleaning stations. Cost is $15 for adults to access the entire pier or $12 for children.

Bridges carry folks from Point A to Point B, but how about Point Sea? You have to get out of your vehicle for that one, but sling a bait under one of these people pathways and you’ll find angling action aplenty. Here’s your quick primer on fishing Tampa Bay bridges.

St.Pete Beach has also been providing similar action to Clearwater beach, and the Redfish have been providing consistent action for charter trips we have done lately. St. Pete is a great area to fish out of because of the action at the mouth of the bay which means every fish that goes in and out of the bay have to pass St.Pete beach going between Egmount Key and Ft.Desoto Park, if you would like to fish any of these areas specifically just let me know.

With the spring season fast approaching, it ‘s a great time of year to experience the local outdoors.  Interested in seeing animals from the plains of Africa, without the plane fare…go to Safari Wilderness, where safari vehicles will tour 260 acres near Lakeland, Florida. Another great place to view wildlife is Busch Gardens…a great zoo as well as being home to many adrenaline raising rides.  Good luck and good fishing.

Tampa/St. Petersburg fishing guide, Captain Wade Osborne is among the best in the business when it comes to providing world-class light tackle Sportfishing for tarpon, snook, redfish, trout, kingfish and more. The first edition was structured to be a basic reference, and was used widely by Captain Mel Berman as his seminar workbook because of its broad collection of topics.  This title is out of print due to changing publishers, but the revised edition, which I’ve drastically added to its content in detail, will be published in the near future.

Tampa Bay has had a great Snapper and Snook bite with a few mackerel and sharks being caught as well. Snapper fishing around the bay bridges and public reefs around near Down town St.Pete or off Macdill air force base have been providing plenty of snapper over the 10” keeper size limit, and for there size these fish pull hard! Snook fishing in the bay has been decent, but not crazy good. Most of the fish have been in the mid 20” range. For the anglers wanting sharks there have been a good number of sharks patrolling the bait schools throughout the bay.

NOTE: Many marine species are managed on a coast-wide basis with seasons and limits required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Those regulations must then be approved by our state’s Marine Fisheries Council. The Council usually addresses these issues at their March meeting with the management measures becoming effective in mid- to late April or early May. The Marine Digest is normally published in May; the 2017 edition will be available in July. Regulations remain in effect until changed.
