One of the area’s true salts, Hawkins taught me an important tactical point: Fishing a bridge doesn’t necessarily mean hugging the structure. There are times when pompano and other species will feed close to the structure, but consider that the eddies spun by flowing tides can create feeding scenarios 100 yards from the pilings.

The wind finally stopped blowing so hard that we couldn’t go offshore. Water temperatures were still in the low 50s offshore at the beginning of the week, and this affected fish behavior. Because the water was calm, we ventured out to the 80- to 90-f…

I’ve found the Paddle Tail to be an essential staple in my tackle box, especially for moving water/current in daytime conditions. I also find it effective when jigging or dead sticking on the bottom. Had a blast today out on the water. Kept us out of the rain and we pulled in some keepers. Great guys that I will definitely get in touch with next ur when I come back down. Looking forward to another… trip already!!! Thanks again guys!!! See More

It’s January and, just like every January for the past 28 years, Old Salt is putting on the Johnny Kellar Inshore Fishing Tournament. We started this tournament due to the very special relationship several Old Salt leaders had with the young Johnny Kellar. Johnny was afflicted with Hemophilia, loved fishing and was in need of an assist. He found one with Old Salt. Read more on the beginnings of the tournament and our special relationship with a fine young man.

I have used the australian army ration pack spoon as a lure and have caught barramundi, saratoga, spanish mackeral, mangrove jack, G.T. , queenfish, cobia and school mackeral with it. Not many of each species, and this has been over the last 25 years. Always when the bite is on, it has a golden shine at first, but after a while it becomes a dull silver. Thats when it gets replaced with a new one
