5/29/09 Snook season closes on June 1The recreational harvest season for snook closes on June 1 in Florida’s Atlantic coastal and inland waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River.  The recreational harvest season for snook in all other Florida waters closed on May 1. Snook season will reopen in all Florida waters on Sept. 1.

In backcountry pockets you can find lurking Snook and Redfish skimming the mud flats. Out front in the grass flats you again can find Snook patrolling the edges of the mangroves, while right behind you massive pushes can be sight casted from tailing Red’s. Finding Flounder near shallow structure is very common, as well as Gator Seatrout working the bait pods just a little further out.

Yes, please meet Captain Mike Anderson. Born and raised in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on June 9, 1968, Captain Mike was introduced to fishing at a very young age. Reared in a family of fishing enthusiasts, Mike joined his father and uncle on a regular basis throughout his childhood, as they would cast for walleye, muskie and perch.

“In addition to being a huge conservation tool that limits the chances of hooking a fish deeply, inline circle hooks actually catch more fish. When set properly, it’s difficult for a fish to shake it — and that provides great peace of mind when that tarpon, big snook or sailfish takes to the air.”

The original bridge was destroyed when the freighter Summit Venture collided with a column of the bridge during a storm on May 9, 1980. In 1992, the center spans of the old bridge were demolished and the remaining sections on the Pinellas and Manatee county sides were converted into piers. The south Skyway pier is the longest fishing pier in the world.

St.Pete Beach we had a few good trips targeting Snapper and Sharks near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Snapper fishing during the summer months provides consistent action and plenty of table fair to take home for a fresh fish dinner! Sharks have been thick and aggressive. Most of the sharks we are targeting are in the 2′-5′ range.

InShoreTampaBay.com charters will originate from any Marina accessible to Tampa Bay area water’s, and from Hudson (Pasco County) in the North, to Anna Maria Island (Sarasota County) in the South. As the sun beats down in another sweltering summer afternoon, a handful of fishing optimists cast lines off the north Skyway fishing pier. With the tide ripping out into the Gulf of Mexico, baits are drifted into the 20- to 25-foot deep water.

I started the month off on vacation fishing in Venice, Louisiana catching Bull Redfish in the 40” range. These fish are hard pulling and don’t give up. Every year I like to make a fishing trip to Louisiana as they have some amazing fishing there. This year has been the toughest year yet, but I was still able to catch some of the big bulls they have!
