Captain Anthony was AMAZING! It was myself and my 2 girls (ages 14 and 9). The fish were coming in one after another. They kept the girls busy reeling the fish in and kept it fun! Thanks for the great… time…we will certainly see you again later this year for another memorable trip! Thank you so much! See More
‘Secrets of the Bay’ is a mini-series which runs intermittently throughout the regular Average Angler seasons. Each episode highlights historical elements of specific places, towns and landmarks around Tampa Bay.

Clearwater Beach fishing has been good just before I left I was catching good numbers of redfish and trout. When I got back mid month we got right back to it with Redfish, Trout, Snook, mackerel, jacks, and many more species fishing the deep grass flats just inside Clearwater harbor and up around St. Joesph sound in Dunedin. Live sardine have been key to our success and they have been abundant, but small. We have even done a couple fly fishing trips lately, and we had no issues catching plenty of fish on the fly! If you want to do a fly trip just let me know.
At the end of the day, fishing in Tampa Bay is always more than just the sum of its parts. The bay supports a vibrant ecosystem abundant with wildlife, endemic species and all sorts of unique natural wonders.

For Inshore trips Capt. Ronald runs one of the 25ft. Black Jack Bay Boats powered with a Yamaha 300 HP Four-Stroke. This boat is also equipped with all of the latest technology including radar for those early morning foggy days in the spring, Depth Sounder, Fish Finder, AIS, and VHF. This boat comfortably fishes 1-3 anglers with plenty of room, however, we can take up to 4 anglers on this boat.
Our fishing rights are under attack like never before in the history of this nation! I urge everyone, saltwater and freshwater, boat or landside fishermen to get involved in the politics of fishing now! (See the two “Warnings” below) There are so-called ‘environmental’ groups getting ‘tough’ with the politicians and pretending they are pro fishing, when in reality they want all uses of our waters to cease immediately. No more fishing, recreational or commercial, no water skiing, no boating, no houses on the shores, also no hunting, no hiking in the wild, NO NOTHING!
The delta and coast line which is mostly Roseau Cane and Marsh surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, is home to an enormous population of Red Fish(drum). They come in all sizes depending on the area you fish, from Bull Reds 15lbs. plus all the way down to the smaller 16-20 inch reds which are excellent table fare. Not only are they great eating but they put up a fight that most anglers will not soon forget. In the same areas we also catch Speckled Trout, Flounder, Sheepshead, and Drum fish. Every once in a while the occasional green trout shows up as well. All months are excellent to fish inshore. The inlets, bays, and ponds that we fish are usually always calm and are protected from windy days most of the time, so your day on the water is very comfortable.
We are currently running inshore and nearshore trips in a 2017 Hanson Skiff. Having a length of 23′, a width of 9′-6″, and a shallow draft, this vessel allows us to fish the inshore flats, the back country rivers, the deep channels of Tampa Bay, and nearshore reefs. The boat is equipped with a large custom livewell, Bob’s Machine Shop Jacket Plate, 8′ Power Pole, Minnkota I-Pilot, Lowrance Electronics…
The Hillsborough River is a time-tested producer along with surrounding ship basins. The mud flats at St. Pete Clearwater Airport are also fairly good. Fishing the deep flats at MacDill Air Force Base, Mermaid Point and Apollo Beach are all good choices, too.

Tampa Bay is Florida’s largest open-water estuary, extending over 400 square miles and forming coastlines of Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas counties. The freshwater sources of the bay are distributed among over a hundred small tributaries, rather than a single river. The bay bottom is silty and sandy, with an average water depth of only about 12 feet.
The type of line that you choose is also important. For generations, monofilament line was the most popular among saltwater anglers. In recent years, however, the use of specialized braided lines has increased exponentially.
The weather is warming up and the abundance of sunshine makes it ideal for sight fishing. You never know what’s crushing the flats! Look for Jack, Redfish, and Tarpon. Sheepshead is in full swing this month to fill the freezers.
Trout Picking Up. Redfish returning. – Quite quickly, temperatures went from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm. In just a few short weeks, inshore water temps have moved almost 15 degrees and are currently closing in on the 70 degree mark. Logic would say that fishing must be impro more…
