Over the past decade or so, the circle hook has become increasingly popular because it tends to hook up in the corner of the fish’s mouth rather than ending up hooked deep in the gullet, which greatly decreases the chances of a successful live release.

With more than 25 years of saltwater fishing experience tucked into his tackle box, Captain Steve Betz is a full time Tampa Bay Fishing guide that promises to provide you one of the best fishing experiences you can.

5: Around the Sunshine Skyway and lower Tampa Bay, the gag grouper bite has been real good around the south Skyway area. There’s also lots of nice sheepshead and flounder, along with some mangrove snapper. The snook are still biting, but they’re on the move. The area flats are producing some nice trout and the size is getting better. There’s also a good bite on black drum from 18 to 24 inches, reports Eric Gilbert Skyway Bait and Tackle (941-357-1122).

The extensive AA log of shows is diverse and quite unpredictable, From AA‘s sickness for spotted fish in “Spotted Fever” to using chicken wire shark cages in “Shark Island”, the over 200 episodes have brought colorful stories, high seas adventure and unique Florida history to the aqua-tube!

Although high-grade conventional saltwater reels and rods provide the necessary backbone for big game anglers fishing offshore, those who are just beginning to fish in saltwater are better off starting out with a quality medium weight spinning combo. Unless you are already well versed in the art of casting a conventional reel, a spinning reel will help you to cast further while avoiding the frustrating backlashes and bird’s nests that are inherent with conventional gear. A quality spinning combo that is rated for 10 to 25 test line will also cover you in a variety of different venues from surf and pier fishing to drifting in bays or intertidal estuaries.

My brother and I took a charter with Captain Greg Doherty this past Wednesday. It was the best fishing trip I have ever taken. Captain Greg had us on fish early and often. He knew exactly what the fish were going to do and when they were going to do it! It was almost surreal as he knew exactly where to be and where to put the bait. We caught so many fish that my brother and I lost track of the final number. Greg’s accomplished fishing skills are only secondary to his great personality. I’ve been on charters where the captain makes you feel uncomfortable or inadequate because you aren’t an experienced saltwater fisherman. Captain Greg demonstrated patience and a desire to actually teach rather than judge. He is a guy that truly gets a kick out of watching you catch fish and makes the trip an enjoyable experience. I had an awesome trip and hope to book another charter with Captain Greg Doherty in the future.

Trout Picking Up. Redfish returning. – Quite quickly, temperatures went from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm. In just a few short weeks, inshore water temps have moved almost 15 degrees and are currently closing in on the 70 degree mark. Logic would say that fishing must be impro more…

Clearwater Beach has been packed with both people and Snook! Snook have made there annual visit out the the gulf beaches and passes to spawn. The snook have been stacked up together and have been eating live grunts on both incoming and outgoing tide. Sea trout have also been hanging in the passes and just off the gulf beaches. Shark fishing has also been productive on recent charters. We have been catching black tips, bonnet heads, Atlantic sharp noises, most have been in the 2-5′ range, and sharks offer great table fair!

One of the area’s true salts, Hawkins taught me an important tactical point: Fishing a bridge doesn’t necessarily mean hugging the structure. There are times when pompano and other species will feed close to the structure, but consider that the eddies spun by flowing tides can create feeding scenarios 100 yards from the pilings.

Captain Greg Doherty is a full time fishing guide, and has been fishing the waters of the Tampa Bay area for over 11 years. Capt Greg has caught everything from Snook, Redfish, Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Cobia, to Snapper, Grouper, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, and Tarpon in the nearshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Anchor uptide of a bridge and hang a chum block off your stern to amass enticing bait schools and provide predators a scent trail to follow. Snapper will rise from the pilings, mackerel will swarm the area and you’ll probably raise a few cobia and sharks. Supplementing a chumline with freshly cut threadfin herring chunks can jumpstart a good bite.

Redfish are an extremely popular target for West Coast Florida inshore fisherman. They are abundant, generally aggressive feeders and, once located, can be caught in significant numbers. Although lacking the speed and jumping ability of the snook, they are most appreciated for their powerful, fighting style. When fishing the flats with artificial baits such as plastic baits or spoons, a redfish provides a jarring strike. Using bait, the take is typically a light tap followed by a driving run. Larger schools of fish can also be located on shallow grass flats. Getting properly positioned in front of a large school of “reds” can quickly put a bend in every rod on the boat. Redfish provide good summer action, even during the hottest months. Although fishing is slower during the winter, groups of fish can be located in the warmer backwater locations. Once located, these schools can provide “rapid fire” action.

Throughout most of the year, the species are caught in very shallow grass flats, up to 3ft. deep. Even though most fisheries go in deep hibernation during the winter months, the tailing Reds of Tampa Bay remain very much active. That said, they usually migrate to deeper waters at this time, normally between 4 and 8 feet.
