June’s fishing report for the Tampa bay, Clearwater Beach, St.Pete Beach area has been hot with action just like the weather! Summer is here and the warmer weather not only brings people to the beach, but it also brings the fish! Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Trout, Mackerel, Snapper, and Sharks have all been around.

4: At Fort DeSoto Park, plenty of pompano along with flounder and sheepshead are being caught around the area. Anglers are catching some real nice keeper gag grouper from the bridge. Spot tail pinfish has been the hot bait on an outgoing tide. The Spanish mackerel bite is good at both the Bay and Gulf Piers and there’s whiting on the beach and in the passes. “Inside the park, there’s been some nice trout caught from the ‘Mud Hole’ area and the snook bite is pretty decent,” reports Capt. Claude Hinson of the Bait Bucket (727-864-2108).

The net affect of this weather was that all Tampa Fishing Guides got a whole lot more vacation days than planned over the course of the last month. On the coldest days, sheepshead were the only logical target.  Although good to eat, the cold air and limited species selection kept most anglers off the water anyway. For those who ventured out, fishing shrimp or small crabs up under docks or against bridge pilings was the ticket.

These structures provide fish much-needed shade, good ambush points with current dynamics and lots of forage species. More or less an emergent reef, a bridge gives anglers a clear target to fish and the ability to move up or down a few pilings to locate the bite. Common targets include tarpon, cobia, pompano, snapper, grouper, sheepshead, redfish, black drum, speckled trout and snook. Spanish mackerel and bluefish make seasonal appearances, and ladyfish are always a possibility.

Also, you can’t go wrong by working near baitfish schools. When food abounds, someone with an appetite will find it, so work your baits into the natural food chain. While you’re at it, don’t hesitate to catch some of the local forage and float them in clear vulnerability on the outskirts of the school and along the bridge’s shadowline.

We have finally had a couple good cold fronts push through and hang around long enough to cool the water temperatures throughout the bay. As we move towards December, we will sometimes switch gears and do some different types of fishing. Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Sheepshead are a few of my favorites that are great to fish for during the winter months.

Of course, the main difference between the two is the depth of the water at the fishing location. In ocean or seawaters, inshore fishing is within a few miles from the shore. Estuaries and bays are popular inshore fishing spots as well. Offshore fishing is far from the shore, typically 20-30 miles out, in waters hundreds and thousands of feet deep.

Stretching out at around 400 square miles, Tampa Bay is the largest open water estuary system in the state of Florida. It is also considered one of the world’s most productive natural ecosystems. This is due to the fact that this type of estuary is one where saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico and freshwater feeds from all along the coast mix. It is here where several species of gamefish, baitfish, and crustaceans spend their critical stages of development protected from larger open water predators.

While mainly an inshore activity, there’s no shortage of nearshore fly fishing opportunities either. Among others, Mackerel and Albacore are well known to take an inviting fly.

Clearwater Beach is getting ready for Summer vacation! Summer is here and everyone is heading for the beaches including the fish… Snook are out around the gulf beaches gathering up for Spawning season and are quite the fighters once hooked up. Snook season is closed currently, but make great catch and reason action. Redfish have been a around and in good numbers. The high tide has been best to catch these fish, and we have often been fishing for trout and snook while we wait for the tide to get to the right level.

Its A New Year Fishing In Tampa Bay! – Several cold fronts have swept through the Tampa Bay area over the past few weeks causing the water temperatures to drop. Bait is still in the Bay, but the fish will only bite it in the areas where the water temperature is a bit warmer, such a more…

Inshore and offshore fishing are vastly different, and both have aspects that make them worthwhile. Although it’s arguable that offshore is more athletic or requires more skill, do not be fooled. Regardless of where you are on the water, you can still find a challenging catch, good eating, and a fantastic time.

I still recall growing up every summer at Ponce Inlet my dad, brother, grandfather, and I would head offshore every chance we had in our 24-ft Wellcraft boat. Even though it was only 24 feet, it had a small cabin, outriggers, and more tackle than you could shake a leg at.
