Thinner braided lines tend to cast easier and farther than most monofilaments. The only drawback is that braided line usually requires a leader in order to achieve optimum performance. But no matter what type line you select, this best types of leaders to use are ones made from fluorocarbon, which becomes virtually invisible to fish once it has been submerged.

Winter Time Fishing is as Good as it Gets! – Last weeks cooler temperatures pushed a lot of the fish closer to their winter time hide outs. With winter time low tides, this typically means the fish are grouped tighter together, and once located we tend to catch a lot in one hole. White bait more…
There is a silver lining to all of this bad weather news however. First, the worst is behind us and second, there are plenty of big seatrout out there waiting to be caught as fishing pressure has been incredibly light. On several recent Tampa Fishing Charters, large trout were caught but both patience and effort were required. Once an area was located that had trout, action was generally not fast. A fish or two would be caught, then the boat would be and another fish or two would be caught. As is usually the case, the bite was better on moving water. With cold temperatures resulting in an absence of whitebait, large shrimp were the go to bait. Another difficulty created by the weather was that, due to a shortage of small fish, birds were hyper aggressive and would relentlessly attempt to steal the free-lined select shrimp being presented. A trick used by some Tampa Fishing Guides for minimizing bait loss is to add a slip bobber which holds the bait just off the bottom but also add a small split shot 6 – 12 inches up from the bait so when casting, the bait sinks quickly and is not consumed by a bird. The expectation on most Tampa / Clearwater Fishing Charters is that limits of trout will be secured on every trip. This should again become reality as February arrives with average temperatures being higher…yes, January is the coldest month.

Redfish schools have started to invade the flats around Pinellas Point. On low tide in the morning, I look for a school on an outer sandbar. These fish are staged on the edge waiting for the tide to come in. Once the water level rises, the fish will …
We take fishing regulations seriously because we’re committed to conservation. It’s important to know and respect the local fishing regulations to help protect and sustain the fisheries. At best, it’s good sportsmanship. At worst, being unfamiliar is a prescription for fines and penalties. We must all do our small part in protecting the fisheries for future generations to come. Please learn more about Florida fishing regulations and how to acquire your fishing license.
